Spanish director Carlos Saura Atares, who won the Cannes Film Festival twice, has died at the age of 92, Variety reports.
While the causes of death of the director were not disclosed, Atares’ relatives said that he died on February 10, 2023. The Spanish Film Academy also announced the death of the director.
“We are deeply saddened by the Film Academy’s announcement of Carlos Saura’s death. Saura, one of the most important directors in the history of Spanish cinema, passed away at the age of 91 today, together with his loved ones.
The most famous work in the filmography of Atares was the drama “Carmen”, which was nominated for an Oscar.
In total, the director received two awards from the Cannes Film Festival, a lifetime achievement honor from the European Film Academy, one award from the British Film Academy BAFTA, a Goya Award and two awards from the Berlin Film Festival.
