A thief, a historical leader, an outstanding athlete, the world’s best trainer with a questionable life… How do you manage this personality change without going crazy?
Working hard on the building of each character, giving each one the place they deserve, and with great concentration.
How do you prepare a character who has everything and does so much damage around him?
It was a very intense shoot. There were so many monstrous things to film, just like the whole episode of the circus with imaginary animals, and how a very complex, very dramatic, very intense episode made life miserable for those close to it. You have to trust the team, the scriptwriters and your colleagues… You prepare by taking great care of yourself and handling everything with care.
What did you mean when you said you had a lot of things about him and the others that weren’t even close?
I have nothing on him. What I want to say is that the characters who play often have things in common, that they find places of empathy to interpret. In this case it was very difficult, because we say very shady and very unpleasant things, it was very complicated.
Were these places of empathy impossible to find?
I didn’t even call them, it’s a very sensitive subject and you have to have a lot of respect because terrible things keep happening, hard things are being said.
Ángel Cristo wasted other people’s lives until he himself wasted.
The show never justifies it. Now that you know more about Ángel Cristo’s life, what do you think of him?
He was a circus-level icon, the best tamer in the world of his time. A boy who had a very difficult childhood, self-taught, reorganized his father’s old circus. But he was a very violent person, he had a huge drug addiction, he was a very complex person, and that was reflected in the relationships he had. He was wasting the lives of others until his own life was wasted as well.
Wasn’t it hard to isolate yourself from such an intense character?
No. Filming took three or four months and I grilled all the meat on set, but I usually don’t take the job home. I’m trying to live a normal life so I don’t go crazy.
But this role gave him anxiety.
Yes, because there were so many unpleasant scenes to do. It wasn’t exactly anxiety, more like discomfort, because in the end you’re describing situations one hopes never to experience, and it’s not easy to recreate scenes of such extreme violence.
This role worries me because you end up describing situations that one hopes never to experience.
Didn’t he force you to shoot in front of Bárbara Rey?
No, I’m like I was on the work set, very focused without looking around.
Did you talk to him, did you tell him what you think about the job?
We had a super intimate relationship, he’s great, we were talking but he never got involved in artistic terms.
This story is candy for gossip. What was the secret of the series so that the result was not pure disease?
reflecting a time They were the icons and high-level representatives of the show, sharing the situation with others. They were representatives of an era that had very strict standards and relationships were different. We take a trip back in time to relive the Spain of that moment and at the same time tell behind the scenes, because what we know about Ángel Cristo and Bárbara Rey is what they lent to the tabloids. It is a journey into oblivion and beyond, to what people see.
Do you think this is the role of your life? Sure so far.
no doubt. We have been so sensitive that… I am very proud of my work.
It seems that more and more talents are emerging from the Murcia School of Dramatic Art.
It always has been. The yoke of Madrid and Barcelona that we now have at the level of actors has become somewhat decentralized and entire communities are falling apart.
Was it undervalued?
Talent from here has always been highly respected, but it’s true that the job market in Murcia is minimal and almost all talent needs to be exported.
What do you miss from Murcia?
I go a lot, the place attracts a lot. Family, food.
How was the chemistry with Belén Cuesta on set?
super good He is a good actor as well as a good partner, we understood each other very well on set and we are lucky to have such a partner. you need big partner To the side to defend it.
