Translator Alexander Gruzberg in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta saidHow he chose the Russian title for his translation of John RR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Gruzberg found the book in the Foreign Literature Library in Moscow in the late 1970s. He was interested in fantasy works in English. “There were thousands of them. Few people were interested in foreign fiction, but for me there was breadth. I chose several books, looked at them, and asked me to microfilm if I liked one, ”she recalls.
Films, the book of which was filmed in Perm, where Gruzberg lived, were published by his friend Alexander Lukashin. I immediately liked The Lord of the Rings, I felt it was a great book. But the question arose, how to translate the name? After all, there are many options,” he added, adding that Lord of the Rings can be called both “Lord of the Rings” and “Lord of the Rings” in Russian.
Now the 85-year-old translator continues to translate from English – working on the action-packed novels of Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz.
