Gossmann chose “symphony 101”. Joseph Haydn and “Symphony 8” Ludwig van Beethoven for this year’s repertoire. The director of OFUA explains that both symphonies have a lot in common. “The similarity of the second movements of the two works is evident, with a very mechanized general rhythm. In fact, Haydn’s symphony was affectionately called “The Clock” because of the andante’s almost constant ticking,” she says.

In the example of Beethoven, “it seems that its second movement was inspired by the invention of a new musical instrument: the famous metronome. Johann Nepomuk Malzel An evolution of Dietrich Nikolaus Winkel’s musical chronometer. However, the most important similarity of the two symphonies is Humorcrafted with a mastery that only musical geniuses like Haydn and Beethoven could produce”.

Adds Tobias Gossman: “Almost no sentence passes without a musical joke, somewhat solemnly hidden under a tablecloth: from false pickups and out-of-the-box accents, to surprising or supposedly false harmonies, musical sarcasm, to the perpetual deception of musical forms. In the end, even Beethoven himself seems to be teasing himself about his endless search for coda and how to end his symphony.”
