Suez Canal Toll Revenue Drops in January Amid Red Sea Tensions

Egypt’s budget revenue from ship tolls passing through the Suez Canal slumped in January as tensions in the Red Sea intensified. Preliminary figures show that earnings from tolls reached about 428 million dollars by the end of the month, a marked drop from 804 million dollars in the same period a year earlier. The head of the Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabie, explained that the traffic through the canal contracted significantly, with ship movements falling around 36 percent due to renewed attacks by Yemeni militant groups. This sharp decline highlights how security disruptions in key maritime routes can ripple through national fiscal plans and influence the broader outlook for regional trade corridors.
