Sber has established itself as a frontrunner among Russian companies in advancing environmental, social, and governance standards. Independent rating and reputation analytics from Scan-Interfax place the bank at the top of the list for organizations actively publishing on ESG topics. This conclusion was reported by the institution’s press service, underscoring Sber’s visibility in the ESG information space.

Compared with 2020, Sberbank has seen a dramatic rise in ESG coverage, with a growth factor of about 2.8. Among the most frequently cited figures in ESG reporting are three Sberbank executives who rank among the ten most mentioned individuals on this agenda, reflecting the bank’s concentrated leadership in sustainability discussions.

The top spot on the leadership list is occupied by German Gref, president and chairman of Sberbank’s board of directors. Following closely is Alexander Vedyakhin, first deputy chairman of the board. Tatyana Zavyalova, Sberbank’s senior vice president for ESG, holds seventh place on the list, highlighting the bank’s internal emphasis on governance and sustainability leadership.

The research highlights notable ESG actions within Sber’s information footprint. For instance, statements released at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum emphasize the bank’s readiness to collaborate with the Moscow government on sustainable development initiatives. Sber has also signaled support for regional and international efforts, including the sustainable development agenda in BRICS countries, along with a policy framework that endorses responsible financing across five ESG risk levels.

Source materials for the study come from approximately 60,000 Russian media outlets, including television, radio, print publications, news agencies, and online media, all cataloged in the Scan-Interfax database. The knowledge space was examined using both quantitative and qualitative measures to ensure a focused view. Background publications were filtered out by centering the analysis on the names of leading companies and their key figures, providing a clearer read on the central players and narratives driving ESG conversations in the sector.
