During the July through November window this year, Russians noticeably increased their purchases of hockey sticks, rising by about 2.2 times, or 119 percent, in comparison with the same period last year. Purchases of snow sticks also climbed, up 1.8 times, an increase of 82 percent, according to findings summarized by Kontur.Market analysts and cited by RIA News. The surge in demand for winter recreation goods is framed as a response to pent-up consumer appetite after earlier market quietness and cautious behavior in the prior year.

Analysts noted that the market witnessed a pronounced rebound in activity for sticks and snowballs as shoppers sought to outfit themselves for the upcoming season. They pointed out that last year was characterized by uncertainty, which suppressed the rush typically seen before winter holidays, and now that hesitation has diminished considerably.

Beyond sticks and snowballs, Russians expanded their shopping lists with snowboards, which saw a 1.5-fold increase compared with the previous year. Sales of pipes rose by 1.7 times, while ski sets grew by about 1.3 times. As the year progressed, however, demand for ice skates, figure skates, and snow scooters softened, reflecting shifting consumer priorities and seasonal timing.

Market projections from Kontur indicate that sales should maintain momentum through the holiday season, with a peak expected during the New Year holidays as many travelers head to both domestic and international ski destinations. This sentiment was echoed by market analyst Daria Zhigalina, who highlighted the seasonal pattern in purchases and travel plans as shoppers prepare for vacation periods.

Pricing trends revealed a noticeable rise in the cost of ice skates over the year, with the average price in 2023 recorded at 9,408 rubles, marking a roughly 40 percent increase from the previous year. Other winter recreation products posted price gains in the 4–12 percent range over the same period, while the average price of pipes showed a decline of about 15 percent. These shifts reflect broader commodity and supply dynamics affecting the winter sports market.

From a destination perspective, Mineral Waters emerged as a leading choice for winter holidays among Russian travelers this season, as reported by the national tour operator Alean. The preference signals a broader trend toward destination-based getaways during the colder months, with consumers weighing value, convenience, and the appeal of specific resorts.

Earlier reporting from socialbites.ca highlighted “Nine cities to which you can fly cheaply for the New Year’s holiday,” underscoring a growing interest in affordable and accessible winter travel options as people seek affordable opportunities to enjoy seasonal recreation.
