The Russian Association of Tour Operators (ATOR) reported a notable rise in demand for travel as the November and New Year holidays approach. According to ATOR, the surge in interest hovered around 30 percent, a figure highlighted by RIA Novosti citing statements from ATOR’s chief, Maya Lomidze.

Lomidze noted that the autumn 2022 mobilization influenced many Russians to pause travel plans. Yet, by 2023 the pattern shifted. Even amid fluctuating exchange rates and economic instability, a strong inclination to book winter getaways persisted, especially for the upcoming holiday period.

The data also show continued curiosity about international destinations. The most sought-after countries include Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Thailand. Prices for international tours tend to track movement in exchange rates, which means shoppers often see price shifts tied to currency fluctuations. ATOR additionally observed that domestic holiday pricing in Russia was expected to rise by around 15 percent in 2023, with forecasts suggesting that travel costs could climb even higher in the following year.

In recent days, a government decision was announced that affects refunds for tourists in 2024, indicating a pause on refunds for certain travel scenarios.

Historically, ATOR has highlighted popular winter holiday destinations among Russians, outlining how travelers weigh domestic options against international trips when planning seasonal getaways.
