Over the past decade, Rosneft has committed 204 billion rubles to initiatives designed to channel associated petroleum gas (APG) into constructive use. This figure is highlighted in an updated public report titled “Rosneft: Contribution to the Implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” issued by the company’s press service. The document chronicles Rosneft’s yearly progress toward the United Nations targets and its role in supporting Russia’s national development programs, while outlining the outcomes of a major gas investment program and a suite of measures aimed at lowering emissions and advancing a low-carbon trajectory.
The report notes tangible milestones in carbon management, detailing how the company has moved forward with practical, measurable actions. Among the highlights, 17 facilities were brought online in 2022, encompassing gas injection into reservoirs, on-site electricity generation, and gas treatment and reuse facilities. The initiative to optimize the use of associated petroleum gas spans all Rosneft locations, promoting the widespread adoption of innovative, energy-efficient, and environmentally conscious technologies throughout production operations.
Rosneft also reports meaningful progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The company continues deploying methane-detection technologies, leveraging unmanned aerial systems and ground-based monitoring equipment to identify and minimize fugitive emissions across its assets. This emphasis on methane management is presented as a core component of the firm’s environmental program and its broader strategy for sustainable operation.
The Rosneft 2030: Reliable Energy and Global Energy Transition roadmap is described as having driven improvements in key environmental indicators in 2022 relative to the prior year. The company states that its efforts to strengthen energy efficiency, expand the use of cleaner fuels, and optimize production processes have contributed to these positive shifts, aligning with both national and global energy transition objectives.
In 2022, Rosneft reports an 11% reduction in the absolute volume of greenhouse gas emissions compared with 2020, underscoring the effectiveness of its emission-reduction programs. In parallel, the expansion of production and retail distribution of Euro-6 compliant fuels and Pulsar, advanced fuels with superior environmental performance, is highlighted as part of the company’s strategy to elevate the environmental profile of its products and operations.
Rosneft emphasizes that its sustainable development activities extend beyond minimizing environmental impact. The company stresses a commitment to delivering a net positive contribution to ecosystems, including undertakings to conserve Russia’s natural wealth, restore and regenerate soil, water resources, forests, and biodiversity. This broader environmental stewardship is framed as a set of long-term obligations that accompany daily business activities and capital investments.
Earlier communications from Rosneft noted reflections on a decade of polar bear stewardship, illustrating the company’s broader concern with Arctic biodiversity and northern ecosystem resilience as part of its broader sustainability narrative.
