In 2023, Rosatom and its affiliated organizations allocated 29 billion rubles to environmental protection, marking an 18% rise from 2022, as reported in an official release by the Russian state corporation. The report highlights that the funds were directed toward ecological initiatives across the group and its subsidiaries, underscoring a continued commitment to sustainable practices.
The corporation disclosed that 6.5 billion rubles were invested in fixed capital for environmental purposes during the year. By comparison, the program in 2022 approached five billion rubles, reflecting a robust expansion of capital projects aimed at reducing environmental impact and advancing green infrastructure.
Of the total investments, 62.6% supported the protection and prudent use of water resources, a share that had stood at 81.8% the prior year, while 23.4% was directed toward safeguarding atmospheric air quality, up from 14.7% in the previous period. These allocations illustrate a shift toward water stewardship with a growing but smaller share directed to air protection.
An additional metric shown in the report indicates that Rosatom’s share of pollutant emissions was pegged at 0.2% for 2023, with production and consumption waste generation held steady at 0.4% of the national total. These figures reflect ongoing efforts to minimize the environmental footprint across operations while maintaining overall waste delivery within a controlled framework.
The electric power division within Rosatom is actively advancing technologies to improve fuel combustion efficiency at existing facilities, signaling a focus on cleaner and more efficient energy conversion as part of the company’s environmental program.
Expenditures by the electric power department on environmental protection reached 6.2 billion rubles in 2023, up 27% from 2022. This increase mirrors a broader push to fund environmental safety measures and modernization across energy-generation assets.
In the fuel division, reductions were recorded in energy use, with electricity consumption falling by 3.9% and heat energy use by 11.7% in 2023, demonstrating a meaningful improvement in energy efficiency within core operations.
Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division also contributes to lower pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions and to higher energy savings, as noted by the group. The reported gains include a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions by 15.8 thousand tons of CO2 equivalent and a reduction in atmospheric pollutant emissions by 2.6 tons. Wastewater discharge decreased by 44.6 thousand cubic meters, signaling progress in water management practices.
The mechanical engineering department reported environmental protection expenditures of 486 million rubles for 2023, representing a 59% increase over the previous year, underscoring intensified investment in environmental programs within this division.
