In 2022 the Russian online retailer Ozon reported a remarkable increase in sales, with turnover rising to 832.2 billion rubles, up 86 percent from the previous year. This figure appears in the marketplace performance data and highlights a strong year for the platform as it expanded its reach and customer base across the country.

Looking at the final quarter of 2022, covering October through December, Ozon demonstrated substantial momentum in goods turnover with an additional 296 billion rubles in volume, marking a 67 percent rise compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. This surge underscores a period of accelerated consumer activity and continued demand for online shopping during the fourth quarter.

For the full year, Ozon reported revenue of 277 billion rubles, a 55 percent increase year over year. In the October to December period alone, revenue climbed to 93.6 billion rubles, representing a 41 percent rise from the same quarter in the prior year. This sustained growth reflects the retailer’s expanding product assortment, logistics capabilities, and consumer awareness in the market.

Despite these gains, Ozon remained unprofitable in 2022, with the company posting a net loss of 11.2 billion rubles. This figure compares to a higher loss in the fourth quarter of 2021 when losses were recorded at 20.8 billion rubles, illustrating a narrowing of losses through improved operational efficiency and scale.

During the year there were several operational disruptions reported in the news cycle. The Reedus online edition indicated that Ozone suspended certain Moscow courier operations after a viral video showed couriers unloading goods from a vehicle in a careless manner. The incident drew attention to last mile delivery conditions and prompted broader discussions about warehouse and courier practices within the market.

Additionally, social media reporting at the close of March highlighted concerns about theft of more than 50 items within the Wildberries market network amid a strike by an employee at a Moscow collection point. These events illustrate ongoing challenges in the logistics and fulfillment landscape alongside rapid growth in e commerce activity across Russia.
