At the Komsomolsk Refinery, part of the Rosneft oil refining complex, domestic virtual reality simulators have been installed to train store personnel in handling electrical equipment. Rosneft states that this technology will enhance the quality of professional training for specialists.

The developers captured two electrical installations in meticulous detail, which supply power to the plant’s main production workshops. A virtual reality helmet enables users to transition instantly from the classroom to any section of the installation to perform required actions using dedicated joysticks. The system is designed to recreate the precise conditions of real operations, allowing learners to practice without exposing the production line to risk.

According to the company, simulators allow trainees to follow the full sequence of operational procedures that workshop personnel carry out, ensuring adherence to the established technologic mode of operation. This approach helps minimize human error and reinforces correct protocols in a controlled environment.

Training can be conducted individually, in pairs, or with guidance from a mentor. The program supports adjustable difficulty levels, chosen to align with the trainee’s current internship status or educational goals. The scalable structure makes it possible to tailor sessions to different skill sets and to progressively increase the challenge as competence grows.

Currently, the VR training modules are in a test phase. Early results indicate meaningful potential for improving the qualifications of specialists. So far, two substation models are accessible within the system, with plans to extend virtual reality coverage to all electrical installations at the facility. This expansion aims to provide comprehensive, hands-on experience across the plant’s critical electrical infrastructure, while maintaining safety and efficiency during the learning process.
