Gazprombank UnionPay cards in Cyprus currently operate without limitations, as reported by TASS citing the bank’s press service. The communication states that Gazprombank UnionPay cards function freely in Cyprus and that customers can perform all types of financial transactions with their cards. The update comes amid broader discussions about how Cypriot authorities and payment service providers respond to evolving sanctions and payment networks.
Earlier reports noted that the Cypriot government had not issued any directive instructing local financial institutions to block Gazprombank credit and debit cards. Restrictions, if any, would stem from unilateral actions taken by individual payment service providers rather than a formal state order. It was observed that several Russian bank cards began to be blocked on the island starting around November 17, with UnionPay cards singled out as a primary example. Gazprombank cards are included in this category in light of the changing processing landscape.
Until recently, customers holding Gazprombank UnionPay cards could pay for goods and services in Cyprus without impediment. In the current environment, some cardholders report reduced access to certain transactions or merchant acceptance, reflecting the tension between international payment networks and local processing decisions. The situation underscores how cardholders tied to foreign networks may be differently affected by shifts in payment infrastructure.
It is also noted that there was prior public discussion at the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the rollout of the Russian payment system Mir across the country, signaling broader moves to diversify or localize payment options amidst global shifts in financial technology and cross-border processing.
