For the first time, Slovakia’s income from Ukrainian refugees exceeded the country’s expenses. This was reported by the publication Dennik n Referring to a document prepared by Deputy Prime Minister Peter Kmets from the HLA Party.
Kmets, whose party is included in the ruling coalition, refers to the data of the Slovak Government Financial Policy Institute. According to these data, refugees from Ukraine in 2024 increased the income of the Slovak state by 217 million € due to income tax, compulsory contributions and VAT. Compared to 2023, it has been clarified that this amount has increased at least one third.
At the same time, the costs of Ukrainian refugees were much smaller – only 98 million €, two -thirds of this amount (65 million €) were compensated for the European Union. From 2022 to 2024, Slovakia spent 504 million € from Ukraine to support refugees as a whole.
In addition, the opposition Estonian Conservative People’s Party (EKRE) President Martin Helme said Estonia officials should send Ukrainian refugees back to Ukraine instead of allegations of sending the army to this country.
