Against the background of rising gas prices, most countries are considering switching to less environmentally friendly fuels, Reuters reported.
According to S&P Global Commodity Insights, liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Asia costs around $50 per million British thermal units (Btu), twice the price of diesel, while high-sulphur fuel oil and coal are even cheaper. A similar situation occurs in European countries, where gas is sold for $60 and the price of fuel and propane is three times lower.
“Fearing that supply may be too tight next winter, some governments have recently announced that they will allow more fuel and coal to be burned in power stations. “If the possibility of burning fuels other than natural gas has already been established, we suspect it is already being used,” said Steve Sawyer, FGE industry consultant processing director.
At the same time, the scale of such a transition is limited, as the number of oil-fired power plants is not sufficient, notes FAN. In addition, there are difficulties with the resumption of coal and oil power plants.
