WSJ: aviation industry giants fear going without Russian titanium amid possible sanctions

Citing representatives of the foreign aircraft industry, the Wall Street Journal argues that Western sanctions on the Russian Federation have encouraged international aircraft manufacturers to diversify their sources of titanium imports, but no real progress has been made in this direction. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury argues that if anyone is sanctioned, it’s against them. The Russian metallurgical company VSMPO-Avisma is confident that it will be the “end of history” if it stops supplying metals to the global aviation industry.

“This is a typical situation where both sides lose,” said Faury.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, Russia accounted for about one-fifth of the world’s titanium production, according to the US Geological Survey.

It was previously known that the European Union was. blocked proposal to impose sanctions on the world’s largest titanium producer, VSMPO-Avisma.
