Congress raises concerns over China’s research funding

The US government’s funding has helped Chinese researchers obtain more than 1,000 US patents since 2010, the agency writes Reuters.

According to the agency, funding from various U.S. government agencies resulted in 92 patents through the Pentagon, 175 from the Department of Energy, and 4 from NASA. The largest number of patents (356) were obtained through funding from the Department of Health and Human Services.

“It is alarming that American taxpayers are unwittingly funding more than 1,000 patents claimed by Chinese entities, with nearly 100 of those patents being covered by the Department of Defense,” said John Moolenaar, chairman of the Republican Election Committee on China.

The number of such patents fell from a peak of 99 in 2019 to 61 in 2023. Despite the U.S. government’s growing concerns that China’s scientific and technological advances pose a threat to national security, 16 patent applications were filed in the first quarter of 2024.
