EU nearly doubles Russian grain imports

Before the tariff hike on grain imports from Russia, the European Union had almost doubled its imports in June, according to Eurostat data analysed RIA NovostiAt the beginning of summer, the EU imported 11.8 million euros worth of grain from Russia, compared to 6.5 million euros in the previous month.

In physical terms, the increase in imports was less pronounced, rising to 43.4 thousand tons compared to 32.8 thousand tons in May. Both of these indicators were the highest since March 2023.

The main increase came from wheat supplies, which increased by 2.4 times to €9 million, and buckwheat supplies, which increased by 2.6 times to €720,000. At the same time, Italy became the main importer of Russian grain in June, with increased purchasing volumes increasing fivefold to €7.2 million.

From July 1, the European Union increased duties on imports of grain, oilseeds and their processed products from Russia and Belarus. Depending on the product, customs duties rose to 95 per tonne or 50% of the cost.

Last week, Vice President Kamala Harris recommended a federal ban on excessive food price hikes. If he wins, he has promised to impose fines on companies that break the rules and to support small food businesses.
