IEA proposes measures to reduce gas consumption in the European Union

Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), suggested five ways to save on gas consumption amid uncertainties about supplies from Russia. This has been reported DEA News”.

According to Birol, it is possible to reduce gas consumption by accelerating the market entry of low-carbon resources, including nuclear energy. Another way would be to create auction platforms. This will encourage industrial consumers in the EU to reduce demand and minimize gas use at the expense of oil and coal. Birol also believes there is a need to strengthen coordination between gas and electricity operators across Europe, harmonize emergency planning and reduce household electricity demand.

“If such measures are not implemented now, Europe will be in a highly vulnerable position and could face much tougher cuts,” Birol said.
