Zimbabwe will completely abandon the use of the US dollar by mid-2026, the African country’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa said. Quoting the publication Daily Maverick.
A new currency, the Zimbabwe gold (ZiG), will become the sole means of payment in Zimbabwe within the next two years. Mnangagwa said this would gradually push the dollar out of the national monetary system.
“In two years we will see that ZiG will be distributed throughout the country and stores will refuse to accept US dollars from customers,” the head of state said.
Currently, 80 percent of all financial transactions in the country are carried out in dollars.
ZiG will be Zimbabwe’s sixth national currency to be launched in the last 15 years with the aim of getting rid of the dollar. Authorities abandoned previous currencies due to hyperinflation.
