Ukrainian authorities refused to pay debts to member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The newspaper writes that the general secretary of the organization, Sergei Lebedev, talked about this. “News”.

According to the head of the international body, legally Ukraine is still considered a member state of the CIS. However, Kiev has not provided funds to the combined budget of the organization for several years, which is why it has accumulated debts to the organization.

“Ukraine refused to pay any debts. But I don’t think they will demand payment of these debts if they leave,” Lebedev stressed.

At the same time, the material with reference to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation states that in 2019 Kiev’s debt to the CIS exceeded 300 million rubles. Journalists have requested the ministry for updated data but have not yet received a response.

The authors of the publication added that in 2024 the Russian Federation will become the chairman of the CIS. However, despite this, Moscow is not trying to force Kiev to leave the organization. As Deputy Head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Mikhail Galuzin said, the country’s authorities do not take such steps because they are not necessary. The diplomat explained that the main task of the CIS remains to promote cooperation between states in the cultural, trade and economic spheres.
