According to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, the amount of cherry production in the organized sector this year is expected to remain above 20 thousand tons, almost at the same level as in 2023. The press service of the ministry told socialbites.ca about this.
The main cherry plantations in the country are concentrated in the South and North Caucasus federal districts, and these regions account for more than 98% of Russia’s total production of this fruit crop. According to officials of key production regions such as the Krasnodar Territory, Crimea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Stavropol, Chechnya and the Zaporozhye region, weather conditions in 2024 did not have a significant impact on the cherry harvest.
The Ministry of Agriculture noted that in some regions of the Central Federal District and the Rostov region, damage to cherry fields was recorded due to recurrent frosts in early May. However, since the share of these regions in total production is small, the damage is not expected to affect the overall forecasts for the cherry harvest.
Before that, head of department Oksana Lut said about possible purchases of apples from abroad.
Formerly Ministry of Agriculture reported about the introduction of the federal emergency regime due to frost.
