Qantas Airways has agreed to pay A$120 million ($79 million) in compensation to passengers and fine authorities over the sale of tickets on more than 8,000 canceled flights between May 2021 and July 2022. The newspaper writes about this washington post.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took the Sydney-based airline to court last year. The regulator accused Qantas of misleading customers by advertising tickets for canceled flights.
Under the terms of the out-of-court settlement, Qantas will pay a fine of 100 million Australian dollars ($66 million) to the Australian government. Approximately 20 million Australian dollars ($13 million) will go towards compensation for more than 86,000 injured passengers.
New Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson has apologized to customers, saying the airline betrayed their trust and failed to meet its standards. She admitted Qantas failed to notify mass flight cancellations in a timely manner.
ACCC chief executive Gina Cass-Gottlieb criticized the carrier’s “appalling and unacceptable” behaviour. According to him, many passengers made holiday or business trip plans by booking “ghost” tickets for canceled flights.
The compensation amount will be 225 Australian dollars ($149) for domestic flights and 450 dollars ($298) for international flights. The payments will complement other measures Qantas has taken, including alternative flights and refunds.
