Wine supplies from the European Union to Russia reached the lowest level in the last six years

Following increased duties on wine imports from unfriendly countries, supplies of still and sparkling wine from the European Union to Russia have fallen by almost 40%, reaching their lowest level in six years. It says importers are now sourcing more products from Georgia, Chile and South Africa RBC.

During the six months since the beginning of the marketing year (for wines, this is August – July of the following year), EU countries have supplied 1.19 million hl of wine to Russia. As RBC announced, this was the lowest figure in the last five years.

It is stated that the decrease in supply occurred after the continued growth in the previous five years and that the previous period was at a record level. Thus, in the first half of the 2022/23 marketing year, Russia received 1.9 million hl of still and sparkling wine from EU countries, which is 36% more than last year.

The leading countries in the supply of wine to the Russian market remain the same, but the volumes of almost all of them have decreased. For example, the largest supplier, Latvia, reduced imports by 44.3% to 368.3 thousand hl of wine.
