Prices for popular cheese varieties in Russia may increase by 5-7% by autumn 2024, and by 15% for elite cheese types (Parmesan and Camembert). This forecast was given to socialbites.ca by Candidate of Economic Sciences, Associate Professor of Statistics at the Russian University of Economics. GV Plekhanova Olga Lebedinskaya.
According to him, Russian cheese producers who invested in increasing production faced a decrease in cheese consumption.
“In 2021, each person living in the EU ate an average of 15-18 kg of cheese per year, while in Russia this was only 6.4 kg. Cheese consumption can no longer keep up with domestic production. More is produced than consumed. As a result, if the prices of popular cheese varieties are likely to change slightly in the autumn (with the expansion of state support programs for the industry), then the prices of elite imported varieties will increase much more noticeably,” noted the economist.
According to him, the increase in export revenues of Russian cheese producers can limit the increase in product prices, but there is one “but” here: the possibility of entering foreign markets is complicated by the fact that only residents of the former Soviet republics can enter these markets. We are ready to eat Russian cheese.
“In general, it turns out that the main factor in the increase in prices is the buyers themselves: the increase in demand for cheese in Russia will reduce tensions in the market and stabilize prices,” Lebedinskaya said.
He announced that Russian enterprises produced 790,781 tons of cheese in 2023, which is 19.3% more than in 2022.
March 18 Lebedinskaya in an interview with the Parliamentary Newspaper guess Prices of dairy products are increasing in Russia.
