The control over the implementation of the embargo imposed by Western countries on raw and polished diamonds from Russia starting from the beginning of 2024 is still operating in test mode due to the lack of an electronic stone certification system. They talked about it RIA News In the European Commission.
According to the agency’s interlocutor, until August 31, 2024, it is still possible to introduce diamonds to European Union countries with the submission of documentary evidence of their origin.
In its guidance on the implementation of sanctions, the EC recommends that importers to the EU must prove that rough and polished diamonds imported into G7 and EU countries are not of Russian origin. To do this, you need to present the certificate of origin, detailed information about the sellers and buyers and the delivery route.
In future, every batch of relatively large diamonds or smaller stones supplied to G7 and EU countries will be required to have an electronic certificate proving that they do not originate in Russia, which cannot be counterfeited or corrected. Such certificates will probably be issued in Belgium.
Canada in early March introduced Additional ban on import of Russian diamonds.
