Information security experts predict that the use of banking Trojans in attacks against Russian customers of financial institutions will increase in 2024. This was reported by “Kommersant”.

Last year, Trojans’ share of such attacks decreased by about 10 percentage points, according to their data.

This is because the financial literacy of the population is increasing and therefore the effectiveness of attacks based solely on social engineering is decreasing. Additionally, many banks do not comply with the regulator’s recommendations to implement modern security measures.

According to Positive Technologies, the share of Trojan horses among malware used in attacks against individuals in 2023 was 13%. Kaspersky and RTM Group also noted a decline in the role of banking Trojans.

Overall, attackers used malware in more than half of successful attacks last year. At the same time, the share of spyware, downloaders and remote access software has also increased.

Trojans are expected to make a comeback in 2024, with their shares expected to increase by about 10 percentage points. Experts attribute this to the rise of hybrid attacks that combine technology and social engineering. Additionally, Trojans can run for long periods of time without the victim noticing.
