Representatives of the US nuclear industry expect the import of enriched uranium from Russia to be banned as early as 2024. The newspaper reports this Financial Times (FT).
“The U.S. nuclear industry expects a ban on enriched uranium imports from Russia to go into effect this year after the House of Representatives voted in favor of the measure in a bipartisan manner in December,” the article said.
FT also writes that Russian supplies should be replaced by the European concern URENCO. Boris Shukht, director of URENCO, said that negotiations on investments in the production of highly enriched uranium are also continuing.
If passed, the bill banning low-enriched uranium imports from Russia will remain in force until 2040. The document imposes restrictions on the import of resources produced in the Russian Federation or registered at enterprises in the country. If other sources of uranium supply are unavailable or imports of Russian fuel are in the national interest of the United States, the US Secretary of Energy, together with the Secretary of State and the head of the Department of Commerce, can lift the ban.
After the passage of the US bill augmented Purchase of uranium from Russia. In the last month of 2023, the purchase amount doubled to 193.2 million dollars.
