As of January 2023, there were approximately 77 thousand registered homeless people in the country. This is almost 2.5 times more than a year ago.

Approximately 84% of homeless people are foreigners. Moreover, almost a third of them are children and young people.

The German Ministry of Social Affairs said, “When refugees from Ukraine are also taken into account, a large number of people have been added to the homeless statistics.”

The ministry cited rising apartment rents, strained housing markets in German cities, rising energy prices and a lack of social housing as other reasons for the rapid increase in the number of homeless people in the country.
