Over the past two weeks, wheat supplies through the Suez Canal have fallen by almost 40% year-on-year to 0.5 million tonnes. Press release World Trade Organization (WTO). The statistics were affected by changes to shipping routes in the Red Sea amid increasing conflicts in the region.

The share of wheat transported from the EU, Russia and Ukraine to Asian and East African countries via alternative routes increased to 42% in January. For comparison: in December this figure was 8%. Until last month, alternative trade routes accounted for only 3% of wheat shipments.

The WTO stated that the total volume of global seaborne wheat imports has decreased in recent months compared to 2023 levels.
