More than half of Russians surveyed (52%) have turned their hobbies into a job. This follows from a survey conducted by the recruitment service hh.ru. socialbites.ca has its results.

Men are 7% more likely than women to take up a hobby as a way to make money. Interestingly, a hobby can develop into something more equal between young Russians (23% of respondents aged 18-24 reported engaging in such a practice) and adults (23% of respondents aged 55+).

Among those whose work stemmed from a hobby, people often became interested in programming and became developers or software engineers; This accounts for 20% of those surveyed. This is followed by mechanics and technicians (18%) and designers and illustrators (11%). Among those who loved literature and made it a way to earn money were 6% of respondents. 20% indicated other answer options, and the most common ones included HR, foreign languages, music and psychology.

At the same time, two-thirds of those surveyed said it was not difficult for them to turn a hobby into a business. However, 33% encountered problems, the main of which were lack of experience (68%) and lack of professional training (41%). Another 37% said they did not meet employers’ professional criteria. 26% did not decide to continue their career due to the profession’s low salaries.

At the same time, a third (31%) of respondents said they were overall satisfied with the income they earned from their hobby business. 69% responded negatively and said they expected more money from their hobbies that turned into jobs. Additionally, construction workers (48%), IT professionals (39%), financiers and accountants (38%) and production workers (37%) are mostly satisfied with their salaries.

The hobby provided serious career advancement for some survey participants. Thus, 9% became their own business owners, 8% became senior managers (department or department head), 16% became a hobbyist, department head or project manager, and 45% became experts in their field. ray.

The research also found that in 67% of cases, people who combine their lives with a hobby and use it to generate income are generally satisfied with their choice. Of these, 39% are completely satisfied with their decision, while another 27% are generally satisfied but expect more from their career. And 23% haven’t gotten what they want yet. 8% plan to switch to another career unrelated to their hobby.

The survey was conducted among 1,427 Russian applicants between December 21, 2023 and January 8, 2024.
