In the period January 1-12, 2024, the number of purchases made by Russians in restaurants increased by 10%, in fast food stores by 5%, and in cafes and canteens by 6% compared to the same period last year. At the same time, the highest average bill in January was seen in restaurants at 1,329 rubles (plus 10% annually). The lowest average bill was at fast food outlets – 458 rubles (plus 14% per year). On average, Russians spent 719 rubles in cafes and canteens; The average annual bill increased by 13%.

Check Index experts noted that expenditures in the food sector during these New Year holidays have become more dependent on weather conditions.

“The buyer preferred the warm spaces of restaurants and bars rather than fast food restaurants; most of these restaurants are located on the streets and are less equipped with climate control equipment to protect against freezing,” experts said.

As a result, by the beginning of January, restaurants became the main attraction among food businesses. In the examined period, the turnover of restaurants increased by 20%, the turnover of fast food outlets increased by 19%, and the turnover of cafes and canteens increased by 18%.
