The production volume of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in Russia in 2023 amounted to 32.33 million tons, decreasing by 2% compared to the previous year. The decrease is due to repair work at the Yamal LNG and Sakhalin-2 plants, which forced them to reduce production for several months during the summer.
The decline was partially offset by the launch of Port LNG, a new mid-sized LNG project in the Baltic. Overall, Russia’s LNG exports reached the highest level of the year – 3.2 million tonnes – in December.
According to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, LNG production in Russia in 2023 amounted to about 8% of the global level. “This is the fourth largest exporting country after the USA, Qatar and Australia,” Novak said.
Shipments of Russian LNG to Europe increased to 16.42 million tonnes by the end of 2023, from 16.25 million tonnes in the previous year. According to analyst Victor Katona from Kpler, the increase in supply was due to the decrease in demand for LNG in Asia at the end of the year.
However, Sergei Kondratyev, an expert at the Institute of Energy and Finance, predicts a decrease in Russia’s LNG exports to Europe in 2024. “I think that with the reformatting of the European market, shipments to the EU may decrease to 12-13 million tons in 2024,” says Kondratiev.
Before that, it was known that Arctic LNG 2 was launched. will provide To increase liquefied gas exports from the Russian Federation by 15%.
Previously European Union reduced LNG flows into the gas transmission network.
