The Central Bank of Russia learned about a new fraud scheme regarding the updated five thousandth banknote. This has been reported telegram channel The central bank.

Attackers call bank customers and talk about the need to verify the authenticity of banknotes through a special application called “Banknotes of the Bank of Russia”. It imitates the original Central Bank application, but under this guise scammers distribute a virus program with which they can gain access to a potential victim’s devices.

Criminals take advantage of the opportunity to break into the phone and steal money from Russians by entering their banking applications. Additionally, fraudsters posing as social workers are going door-to-door to persuade citizens to exchange old 5,000-ruble notes for new, allegedly fake, notes.

The Central Bank warns that the official application, unlike fraud, does not establish the authenticity of banknotes and offers to exchange banknotes should not be taken into account.
