“Our country already has experience with relevant developments,” the minister said at the plenary session of the Russian Transport forum.

Speaking about the operation of the Tu-144 supersonic aircraft, Savelyev emphasized that “this machine was ahead of its time.” The minister added that Russia now has developments to create such an aircraft on a new technological basis.

Savelyev said on Channel 1 in 2022 that Russian aviation will return to passenger transportation with supersonic aircraft. He explained that he was “deeply confident” in this matter. The minister explained that aircraft such as Tu-144 and Concorde were ahead of their time and the transport infrastructure was not ready for them. In his opinion, both planes were “a little early.”

The Tu-144 is a Soviet supersonic passenger aircraft developed by the Tupolev design bureau in the 1960s. The first test flight took place on December 31, 1968. This was the world’s first flight of a supersonic passenger aircraft. The Anglo-French Concorde made its first test flight on 2 March 1969.
