Russian Ambassador to Oslo Teimuraz Ramishvili said in an interview: RIA NewsNorway will not be able to replace Russia in the European gas market. He noted that the 2022 energy crisis showed that Norway, operating at the limit of its energy production capacity, could only increase gas supplies to the European market by 8% (about 9 billion cubic meters).
The diplomat added that according to statistics, Norwegian gas could not cover more than 10% of Russia’s supply before the energy crisis. Therefore, it seems unlikely that Norway will gain a large market share despite having approximately 1/3 of the total gas supply to Europe.
According to the ambassador, this was due to the decrease in national investments in existing oil and gas infrastructure and exploration of new fields in the last four years, as well as the significant increase in gas consumption in the domestic market.
Ramishvili also explained that this situation is aggravated by the activities of local “green” activists who advocate stopping the extraction of natural resources on the Norwegian shelf.
