Travel and accommodation
There is a wide package of transportation benefits for students. In other words, tickets for suburban trains are 50% cheaper. The campaign is valid between 1 September and 15 June. To benefit from the discount, you must present your student card, full-time education card or another document requested by regional authorities. You can buy discounted tickets within the Moscow Railway by using the Muscovite social card or the Moscow Region resident card. Additionally, Russian Railways offers a 25% discount on long-distance trains under the Russian Railways Bonus program.
The government also provides subsidized air tickets to citizens under the age of 23 every year.
The most important benefit, which is now commonplace for us, is providing accommodation for students. This is very important, because the model of mass and accessible higher education works in Russia thanks to the student dormitories system. Dormitory is provided to students studying full-time. Part-time students can benefit from free quotas in the dormitory during the certificate period.
First of all, students who receive social scholarships are given a place in the dormitory.
Additionally, these students are exempt from monthly room rent in the dormitory; they only pay expenses if they are provided for. If desired, the educational institution can give discounts on hostels and services to other students.
Tax deduction and deferment from the military
All working students can receive tax deductions; They can refund part of their personal income tax to the state. If you spent money on education, a deduction is required. It doesn’t matter what it is: university, college, driving school, programming or English courses. The important thing is that the institution has a license for educational activities. You can also apply for deductions for children in full-time education, brothers and sisters under the age of 24, at your own expense. In addition, parents who pay their children’s education expenses at a higher education institution can also apply for tax deduction.
We should not forget another privilege of students who attract the attention of young people. We are talking about the right to postpone military service that accredited college and university students have. It is valid after admission to the educational institution and until the end of the education.
In this case, it is recommended to register immediately after school, before the first of October, otherwise there is a risk of being drafted into the military.
After receiving a diploma, university students can continue and defer their education. Undergraduate students can attend master’s programs and then graduate school. Experts have only one way; Going directly to graduate school. After graduation, the young scientist will be given another year to prepare to defend his thesis.
Please note that there is no postponement:
– students who obtained a first place on the basis of a second higher education or secondary vocational education;
— students remotely, by correspondence or at evening faculty;
— students in programs without state accreditation.
In order to receive a deferment, you must provide a certificate from your place of study to the military registration and enlistment office. It is valid until exported. In addition, the right to postponement continues if the student is on leave or transfers to a new program accredited at the same level. Deferment is valid only if the duration of study does not increase by more than one year.
It is also necessary to pay attention to the delay in mobilization. It was provided to students studying for the first time, full-time and part-time. Students can apply for:
— at universities and colleges with state-accredited programs;
— as graduate students in scientific institutions;
– in religious educational institutions.
Benefits for students’ parents
Students who become parents during their studies have access to two types of benefits: holidays and benefits. From January 1, 2023, a single benefit is paid to pregnant women who register before the 12th week – 50% of the subsistence level of the working population in the region.
During maternity leave, the student will continue to receive social benefits. A pregnant woman, just like working mothers, has the right to benefit from maternity benefits in addition to her holiday. Payments are received by students studying both on a budget and for a fee. The amount of maternity benefit is equal to the salary for the academic leave period, but only full-time students can apply for this benefit. If the scholarship is increased, the payments will be the same.
After giving birth, the student or the child’s father can receive lump sum benefits. From February 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024 22,909 rubles.
Child care benefits for children up to one and a half years old can be applied for by the mother or father. If one of the parents works, the benefit is paid by the employer. The amount of assistance is 40% of the average earnings of the previous two years. It pays social security benefits if both parents are students or if one is a student and the other is not working. The minimum monthly child care allowance in 2023 is 8,630 rubles.
Scholarships and social aid
It is also necessary to mention the financial security of socially disadvantaged students. It is extremely important for such children to have a source of income so that they can complete their higher education programs consciously and efficiently. There is a State social scholarship for such students. Payments start from 2,739 rubles for universities and 996 rubles for colleges. This amount is more than modest, but the increased social scholarship raises the total amount of social and academic scholarships to the subsistence level in the student’s region of study.
In order to receive a scholarship, you must study without taking notes or revision, and also receive a social scholarship in your first and second years. Also, excellent and good students under 20 years of age who have only one parent (a disabled person from the first group) can count on increased social scholarships.
There is also a survivor’s pension for students who have lost a parent, a payment received by disabled family members of the deceased. Non-working students receive a pension until the age of 23. Pension is available only to citizens of the Russian Federation who are full-time students. The amount of payments is the living cost of the retiree in the beneficiary’s region.
Tickets to museums and theaters
Students can visit museums, theaters and educational events for free or at deep discounts. While entry to many museums is completely free, some only offer free tickets on certain days. For example, entrance to the Hermitage is always free for students. To the Tretyakov Gallery – on the first and second Sunday of every month. Entrance to the Moscow Kremlin is free, but there is no right to see the cathedral museums and temporary exhibitions.
Theaters work in a similar way. For example, Et Cetera theater offers a 50% discount to students on some weekdays. If there is still space in the hall, you can watch the performance in the Pyotr Fomenko Workshop for free. It’s also free at Praktika, but you must notify the administrator via email on the day of the performance. Discounted tickets to the Bolshoi Theater can be purchased using the Pushkin Card.
