“We will continue our efforts to restart the Black Sea grain initiative under the leadership of our President,” the ministry said.
The publication also states that the republic plans to continue observing the principle of “regional responsibility” in the Black Sea. In this context, Ankara will continue to meticulously fulfill the obligations specified in the Montreux Convention.
The Montreux Convention was signed after the conference on the Black Sea Straits regime held in Switzerland in 1936. Representatives from Turkey, USSR, England, France, Romania and many other countries attended the event.
As a result, Turkish authorities gained the right to remilitarize the strait region. The document also protected the right of free passage of all countries’ commercial ships through the straits, but imposed some restrictions on the movement of warships.
