Sberbank talked about preventing a major fraud using a new scheme against a client, warning the Russians that attackers began calling potential victims allegedly on behalf of their bosses, and a fake curator from the intelligence services was involved in the conversation. As the Sberbank press service clarified, the client contacted the bank to urgently close all deposits with loss of interest. The total amount of deposits was 12 million rubles. This operation was unusual for the client, and he himself was nervous during communication, which aroused suspicion among the SberFirst client manager, who was on the alert and included in the bank’s security service.
After contacting bank employees, the customer realized that he was under the influence of fraudsters. Thus, it was possible to prevent crime worth 12 million rubles.
Sberbank explained that the attackers used the following scenario: they found the victim’s workplace on the Internet, created a fake Telegram account for the head of the organization and made calls on his behalf. The fake leader said he was in the FSB and that “an auditor from the FSB” was involved in the communication. The fake curator then informed the victim that his money was in danger and needed to be withdrawn from his bank account and placed in a “secure account.”

“Staff regularly undergo special training to effectively detect signs that the client is under the influence of third parties. “Thanks to our fraud prevention platform and the diligence of our employees working in our offices, we save our customers’ funds from fraudsters every day,” added Kuznetsov.
