American businessman Chuck Feeney, the founder of Duty Free Shoppers and who donated approximately 8 billion dollars, died at the age of 93. Forbes referring to the charity founded by the benefactor.
Feeney was reported to have died in San Francisco on Monday.
The publication emphasizes that the philanthropist left $2 billion for his retirement and is survived by his wife, five children from his first marriage, 16 grandchildren and four nephews.
The businessman first appeared on Forbes’ list of the richest Americans in 1988, the publication notes. At the time, his fortune was estimated at $1.3 billion, but it was later revealed that Feeney’s capital was much larger, as he secretly transferred most of it to charity. The funds obtained here were transferred to health services, scientific research and human rights activities.
For example, money from the fund was directed to projects to combat AIDS in South Africa and the development of universities in Ireland.
