A Belarusian citizen living in the United States pleaded guilty to evading anti-Russian sanctions

Sergei Karpushkin, a Belarusian citizen living in Miami, admitted that he bought metal from a businessman under American sanctions. This was reported by Ministry of Justice UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

In the statement made by the ministry, it was stated that 46-year-old Karpushkin pleaded guilty to exceeding sanctions and participating in a money laundering scheme. According to American law enforcement, from July 2017 to August 2020, Karpushkin laundered money by purchasing metals from businessman Sergei Kurchenko, who has been under US sanctions since 2015.

The sentence of Karpushkin, who admitted his guilt and agreed to pay a fine of $ 4.7 million, will be determined later by the court.

Previously the European Union elongated Individual sanctions against Russia until March 15, 2024. Since 2014, personal sanctions have been imposed on approximately 1.8 thousand Russian citizens and organizations. Restrictive measures include banning individuals from traveling to EU countries, freezing assets and banning funding to individuals and entities on the list.
