Unions identify 11 major violations of women’s right to work in Russia

According to the information revealed by the Russian Federation of Independent Trade Unions (FNPR), nearly 35 percent of women in Russia face violations of their labor rights, and 22 percent said that the employer violated the law. This was reported by 23 percent and 21.4 percent of Russian women surveyed by FNPR. 11.1% stated that their requirements regarding appearance are more stringent than those of men. 11% of those surveyed also reported discrimination in employment.

10.8% of the participants complained that they had to leave work during pregnancy, and 9.5% of them complained that women’s wages were underestimated. Russian women also reported having to quit their job due to health problems and reaching pre-retirement or retirement age. The list of violations also included discrimination and harassment in appointment to leadership positions.

Rostrud told RBC that the number of violations of women’s right to work in the country last year was 0.1%, and the number of complaints received did not exceed 0.5% of the total. The Ministry of Labor of the Russian Federation did not respond to the request for publication.

FNPR conducted a sociological study of more than 23,000 participants aged 26 to 60.
