Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said in an interview with TV channel: CUSTOMHe said buying gas from Russia was “distasteful” but could not be avoided for the time being for his country.

“The number one priority is security of energy supply,” he said.

According to the politician, if it is violated, the system and production, as well as the energy supply to the people, will be disrupted.

“It’s not nice. It’s morally unacceptable, but it’s the truth,” said Nehammer.

He also stated that Austria has started to reduce its dependence on Russian gas from 2022. As the Chancellor pointed out, the republic is trying to expand supply through Germany and Italy to have the opportunity to tap into new resources.

At the same time, he noted that the Austrian oil and gas company OMV has contracts with Gazprom for the supply of gas to Austria until 2040, and it would be expensive to unilaterally terminate them by Vienna. The politician added that “burning gas somewhere would have the opposite effect.”
