The largest Russian Internet retailers, such as Ozon, Wildberries, SberMarket and others, sharply criticized the Ministry of Digital Development’s attempt to make an infrastructure payment in favor of Russian Post. This has been reported forbes.

In an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the leaders of leading online retailers said that the draft law, which will collect 0.5% of the turnover of companies with an annual income of 1 billion rubles or more, will seriously harm the country’s economy. and inevitably cause an increase in prices for end-user consumers.

According to online store owners, this fee is actually a hidden tax for buyers and its size is disproportionate to the financial capabilities of the business. For example, for the unprofitable Ozone, a payment of 4.2 billion rubles would add to the loss of 58 billion rubles. Wildberries could be another example; if the law is passed in 2022, the market place of net income of 11 billion rubles last year will have to pay Russian Post 8 billion rubles on a turnover basis.

In addition, the companies note that the redistribution of funds from the private sector to the state structure will not solve the problem of Russian Post’s unprofitability. The letter includes a call for this legislative initiative to be abandoned altogether.

Experts support the position of retailers and consider the idea of direct subsidization of Russian Post by rival companies unacceptable. In their view, the state monopoly should streamline processes and form partnerships with private businesses, rather than placing a de facto tax on online commerce.
