The Russian Post’s new requirements for the presentation of passports when sending registered letters, parcels and parcels from September 1 will lead to an increase in the level of security of this process and a decrease in the volume of counterfeit goods in the country. “Now the new requirements of the Post are a necessary measure due to the need to ensure the safety of employees, citizens and the country as a whole. In the case of sending goods that pose a threat to the population, both the Russian Post and law enforcement will be able to instantly find the sender and receiver of these packages. This will prevent tragedy,” he explained.
Kovalenko also added that it will become easier to deal with marriage and counterfeit products when sending packages from various marketplaces and services such as Avito.
The Economist does not foresee a decrease in the number of letters, packages and parcels sent by Russian Post within the scope of the new measures. Presenting a passport was mandatory until September 2023 for most commercial companies offering similar services.
Kovalenko also said that Russian Post could have a competitive advantage over commercial companies due to its wider distribution network and lower prices. Another advantage of “Mail” is the availability of regular senders among large online stores. He added that they may find unscrupulous buyers who refuse to pay.
On August 21, it became known that Russian Post employees will begin to verify the identity of senders of registered letters, parcels and parcels with passports from September 1. According to Russian Post, it will also be possible to verify customers using a driver’s license or a simple electronic signature.
