Russians start buying more fast food

During the year, the number of fast food purchases in Russia increased by 8%, and in the first half of 2023 the average check increased by 10% to 439 rubles. This is due to the statistics of the source of the Control Index of the OFD Platform company, provided at the request of socialbites.ca.

The number of hot dog purchases increased the most – 10% year over year. Burgers ranked second in popularity with a 9% increase in purchases over the year. The third and fourth rows are occupied by shawarma and pizza (plus 7% and 5%, respectively).

At the same time, the price of burgers increased by 10% on an annual basis, to 241 rubles. In terms of cost increase, pizza and hot dogs were in second place. The average bill for pizza in January-June amounted to 381 rubles, which is also 9% higher than last year. Russians paid an average of 172 rubles for a hot dog in the first half of this year, which is 9% more than in the previous year. Consumers paid an average of 162 rubles for shawarma, which is 6% more than last year.

According to resource analysts, the Russians chose pizza with ham, ham with mushrooms and cheese the most this year. Among the most purchased burgers were meat, cutlet, cheese dishes and chicken fillet on thin pita bread, lamb meat, shawarmas with different sauces. The most popular among hot dogs were the classic, French and Danish versions with beef sausage and mustard.

“During the coronavirus restrictions, fast food outlets continued to be the main catering sales channel, directing customers from restaurants and cafes to them. However, food demand from fast food outlets was well below pre-pandemic levels. After the restrictions were lifted, sales rose again as demand gradually returned to the previous consumption pattern,” the Chek Index press service explained the trend.

The press service added that since 2022, the development of domestic tourism has been supported by the increase in the general mobility and mobility of citizens. Thus, the trend feature of the 2022-2023 holiday season was car travel, which contributed to the 20-22% year-on-year increase in the volume of fast food purchases at gas stations.

The study was based on an analysis of 50-55 million cash register receipts from more than 1.1 million online cash registers in Russia. The January-June 2023 period was compared with the same period of the previous year.
