In the January-May period, perfume and cosmetic purchases decreased by 21% compared to the previous year. Perfume and cosmetics spending also increased in the first half of 2023. The average check for a purchase during this period amounted to about 4 thousand rubles, which is 5% higher than in 2022 and 21% higher than in 2019. According to analysts, sales in monetary terms increased by 19% compared to January-June of last year and by 32% in 2019.
The trend was confirmed for publication by the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and retail chains. According to the Ministry, in the first half of the year, the consumption of hair care products increased by 80% on an annual basis, perfumery – by 70%. The consumption of decorative cosmetics also increased by 70%. Experts interviewed by RBC drew attention to the recovery in the Russian cosmetics market and announced that there is now a wide range of products on store shelves. Edgar Shabanov, head of the Rive Gauche network, stated that compared to a year ago, 20% more goods are now purchased in a single purchase.
Research firm BusinesStat pointed out that from 2018 to 2022, cosmetics sales in Russia fell by 2.6% from 3.49 to 3.4 billion units, including the pandemic and special operations. During the pandemic, many were in self-isolation and limited themselves to buying the most essential things. After the start of the special operation, a number of foreign manufacturers stopped the supply of perfumes and cosmetics to Russia. For example, the French interested L’Oreal and the American manufacturer of cosmetics and perfumery Estee Lauder. In addition, Shiseido Group, one of the largest cosmetics manufacturers in Japan, has limited supplies to Russia. Through parallel imports, goods from Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Lancôme, Giorgio Armani and others have been imported into the domestic market since 2022.
