Scammers have adopted a new tactic by disguising remote access programs as banking apps and are actively distributing them via instant messengers. Attackers create fake remote access apps by copying legitimate apps that are also available on Google Play. Since legitimate apps are open source, it is not particularly difficult for scammers to create fake apps based on them.
The scam scheme is as follows: First, attackers pretend to be bank support workers, looking for potential victims and, under various pretexts, convincing them to install a “support app” for Russian banks. They then send the application as an installation file via messenger. If the victim installs this application on their phone, the only thing left to the scammers is to obtain the necessary data to access the device remotely. By gaining remote access to a smartphone, attackers can find credentials to log into the bank’s mobile app or access an account to steal money.
Previously, scammers tried to persuade their victims to install a remote access program directly from Google Play. However, they have changed tactics now that many users realize that they are confused by the name and appearance of programs not associated with banks.
