Large grocery chains want to automate self-payment (CSR) for the sale of alcohol and tobacco using biometric data to facilitate age verification. In this respect writer Kommersant cites sources and market participants.

The source of the publication on the market noted that the representatives of retail chains applied to the Ministry of Digital Transformation with a request for clarification of the interpretation of the legislation on personal data. We are talking about whether it is possible to use data from a single biometric system (UBS) to verify tobacco and alcohol buyers, which would allow it to not require a passport for CSR. This can put employees at ease.

Biometric Technologies Center JSC stated that it is already legally possible to use biometric data for such purchases, as biometric data is equivalent to presenting a passport. At the same time, market experts believe the software needs to be updated to incorporate biometrics technology into CSR. At the same time, the introduction of CSR helps relieve traffic in the store, and the introduction of digital identification can increase sales efficiency.

According to the VTsIOM survey for June 2023, 32% of respondents are negative, 27% positive about the provision of biometrics. Also, according to NtechLab, 78% of Russians prefer to shop using a debit card, while only 13% of respondents prefer biometrics.

At the end of December, Vadim Vinogradov, head of the working group of the Civil Chamber of the Russian Federation on legislation in the field of Internet technologies and digitization declarationIt is undeniable that biometrics is still talked about a lot in society, but the pressure on citizens is unacceptable no matter how advanced the technology is in the future.
