China is pressing the European Union to lift restrictions on Chinese companies that Brussels believes are supplying Russia with equipment for military operations in Ukraine. It has been reported Bloomberg citing sources.
The European Commission is currently considering restrictions on eight Chinese firms it says “directly support the Russian military-industrial complex”. Bloomberg writes that after these plans were announced, Chinese diplomats met in Brussels and Beijing to persuade their European counterparts to lift restrictions.
According to one of the sources, the Chinese side has threatened European diplomats with retaliatory measures if export restrictions are still imposed.
According to another source, any response by China to EU decisions will “probably be towards the bloc at the institutional level.”
China’s ambassador to the EU, Fu Cong, said in an interview that Beijing wants to “collectively” solve the problem. It also urged the EU to provide evidence that Chinese companies engage in activities that exceed European sanctions against Russia.
